Accounting for transportation and logistics
Our office sits between Doral’s warehouses and the airport, where much of Miami’s freight business lives.
Why freight businesses need specialized books
A trucking company files more than an income tax return. Interstate carriers report fuel tax quarterly under IFTA, heavy vehicles of 55,000 pounds or more pay the federal highway use tax on Form 2290, and owner-operators paid as contractors receive 1099-NEC forms. Miss a quarter and the penalties and interest start immediately.
Freight forwarders and import-export companies have a different problem: money moving in several currencies, customs and duty costs that belong to specific shipments, and customers who pay in 60 or 90 days. The books have to track each shipment’s margin, or the business cannot tell which lanes make money.
Both need insurance set up around payroll. Workers’ compensation is priced on payroll and job classification, and the carrier audits it after the year ends, so accurate payroll records make the audit routine instead of a surprise bill.

“The only place we go to for tax services. We are treated like family and not just another customer. They are professional and do not gate-keep information, in fact, we are educated on all the questions we have for filing and we’ve recommended tons of friends and family to go here. Thank you for taking care of us!”
Questions we hear from this industry
I’m an owner-operator. Can I deduct per diem?
Yes. Self-employed drivers can deduct the federal per diem for meals on days away from home, at the percentage allowed for transportation workers. Company drivers who receive a W-2 cannot, so how you are paid matters.
Do I need IFTA?
If your qualified vehicles cross state lines, yes. IFTA lets you file one quarterly fuel tax return for all member states instead of one per state. We prepare it from your mileage and fuel records.
What is Form 2290?
The federal heavy vehicle use tax, due each year for trucks with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more. The filing period runs from July 1, and the stamped Schedule 1 is needed to register the vehicle.
Can you quote our truck and cargo insurance?
Our licensed agents quote business auto, general liability and workers’ compensation. Ask us about your fleet and we will tell you which lines we can place and which need a specialty carrier.
